Newcastle punks Dead Mall have today released the final tease for their upcoming debut album with explosive new single ‘EVICTION NIGHT’; a nu-metal inspired epic that continues to push the band’s sonic palette, whilst thematically drawing from very specific source material.
Like all recent singles from ‘SUPERLIMINAL’ (currently set for release on August 21), ‘EVICTION NIGHT’ sees Dead Mall move into new stylistic territory, with elements of metalcore and Nu Metal seamlessly finding their way into the band’s sound.
Featuring one of the most impactful breakdowns on the record, ‘EVICTION NIGHT’ is one of the largest sounding tracks from the band so far – a fitting last single to what has been a busy year for the emerging 5-piece.
Lyrically, the track was inspired by frontman Ruairi Burns’ love for the Australian reality TV series Big Brother – a show that he himself has auditioned for multiple times in the past. Although he never got past the first round, he had big ideas for his arrival – and thus ‘EVICTION NIGHT’ emerged as a tongue-in-cheek love letter to one of his favourite programs.
“I don’t know if I really wanted to be on Big Brother but I’ve applied 3 or 4 times over the years. Mostly, I was into the idea of making the audition tape. I’m sure I have the tape somewhere, and I do mean tape. I always used my VHS camera and one single tape. I’d edit it so that when it cuts, you’d see a glimpse of the old auditions, or random footage that made me look even more insane. I had a lot of really stupid plans for once I got in there.
Like, I started learning all of the dialogue for ‘Toy Story’, so I could repeat it word for word. Or, when I’m alone, talk to the cameras and audience in a completely different voice. In the diary room, I wanted to address ‘Big Brother’ simply as ‘Brother’, but in a way that felt dark and villainous, like I was always doing his evil bidding.
I never got past the first round of auditions, so ‘Eviction Night’ is my Big Brother fantasy (not that kind). At the time it was written, they were airing their worst ever season, so I had a lot of grievances to air. I have no grievances with Gretel Killeen though.” RUAIRI BURNS, DEAD MALL
Engineered and mixed by the band’s guitarist Darcy Long. ‘SUPERLIMINAL‘ has the kind of attention to detail and personal touches that are only ever achieved by working ‘in house’. Music wise, most of the instrumentation was written by guitarist Joe Willis before they hit the studio, who sent over intricate demos that, to this day, sound pretty close to the finished product. They then fleshed things out – moving between Durham Studios, Sawtooth Studios and Darcy’s house – collaborating at any chance they could to bring the album to life.
To celebrate the release of the album, the band are set to hit the road – with album launch shows set for Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle in late August. More shows across the East coast will follow in the back end of 2025.
