Naarm/Melbourne-based five piece Great ~ Falls have returned for their first release in two years with the striking and poignant new single, ‘Radioinactive’. Delivering equal measures of magic and melancholy, the track ebbs and flows effortlessly throughout, building with grace around a single unrelenting riff into a delightfully gritty breakdown.

With this grungier undertone tying readily into the moody textures the band are known and loved for, ‘Radioinactive’ saw Great ~ Falls venture into new sonic spaces. The band say, of the track:

“It’s a bit of a departure from our usual sound – heavier, more immediate, and built around this one guitar riff that flat-out refused to leave the room. That riff became the foundation for something concise, punchy, and unapologetically to the point.”  GREAT ~ FALLS

In its lyrics, ‘Radioinactive’ found inspiration from an unlucky moment and a late-night trip to the emergency room; an offhand remark that “stitches tend to pop” stuck, and eventually became the foundation on which they would build the song.

Simultaneously, Great ~ Falls found themselves pondering on the character of Radioactive Man, playing with the concept as one of the song’s central ideas. Soon after, folding into the track’s layered reflections, came the imagined counterpart of RadioINactive Man.

What resulted was a playful but pointed exploration of what it would mean to “step away from constant productivity” in our lives — asking what it means to no longer want to be ‘Radioactive’?

Great ~ Falls recorded their new single at A Secret Location Sound Recorders with long-time engineer Paul Maybury (King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Cable Ties, Grace Cummings).

With the band split between two states, ‘Radioinactive’ marks the first time they were able to record altogether in one room, playing live to tape rather than sending parts remotely back and forth.

In a rare opportunity to feed off of one another’s energy, this shared experience resulted in a performance which captures both fresh drive and absolute cohesion. Mastered by Casey Rice (Dirty Three, Witch Hats, St Helens), ‘Radioinactive’ reflects a powerful moment of collaboration, and a bold step into new territory for Great ~ Falls.

Great ~ Falls will be celebrating the new single with a launch show at Melbourne’s Bergy Bandroom in Brunswick, where they’ll be joined on stage by friends Comets and Tom Lyngcoln for a jam-packed night of top-notch tunes.
