Having experienced a touchstone year in 2025 as a band, Adelaide’s MOLLY ROCKET break open a brand new chapter this year with the reveal of their much anticipated new body of work: THE DOGS ARE BARKING.
The band’s new EP serves as a potent reminder of the indie group’s chemistry – both as a songwriting and live unit – while also demonstrating the ambition that propels the band forward as one of Australia’s exciting fresh voices.
Led by vibrant and dynamic EP opener ‘ANOTHER YEAR’, the listener is invited to get lost in the track’s grittiness; a pure fusion of rock and pop licks that set the rest of the EP up as one helluva ride.
“Another Year’ is a gritty rock song with pop moments woven through it. The lyrics sit inside a person’s inner monologue as they wrestle with thoughts of death. As the song unfolds, they choose numbness over dying, buying themselves more time as the weight of that reality slowly sinks in.
Ocean imagery runs throughout the lyrics, touching on ideas of ownership, fear, and losing a sense of self as everything starts to shift around them.” MOLLY ROCKET
THE DOGS ARE BARKING came together in sessions at Melbourne’s Wrangler Studios, with the band teaming up with Tim Maxwell (LOSER) to bring their ideas to life in the studio. Written over the course of a year, the EP began to take shape as stories and observations about the complexities and uncertainties of life started to filter into MOLLY ROCKET’s writing process.
The EP, which also features previously released tracks ‘Breathing Lead’ and ‘When He Walks Around’, captures a strong portrait of a band who has confidently stepped into a matured and intimate songwriting space with their overall sonic identity redefined.
“In those early stages it was really only melodies and chord progressions taking shape. Over the months that followed, those sketches slowly turned into something that felt like ours. Lyrically, we leaned into a more poetic approach than we ever had before, focusing on how certain words or phrases made us feel and trusting that those feelings might land with other people too.
Across The Dogs Are Barking, the lyrics reflect a lot of uncertainty and the worry that comes with it. That was heavily influenced by the wider challenges happening around us while we were writing. Even so, there are small moments of optimism woven throughout the EP, little flashes of light cutting through all that uncertainty. The songs came together through collaboration. As a band we reworked structures, tempos, rhythms and overall atmosphere until everything felt right. We shaped each song around everyone’s strengths, so that in the end each of us filled a piece of the puzzle and the EP felt complete.” MOLLY ROCKET
Since their impactful debut in 2023, Molly Rocket have been on a fast trajectory for success and notoriety. They have earned nominations at the 2023 South Australian Music Awards (‘Best Rock Artist’, ‘Best Song’, ‘Best Release’, ‘Best New Artist’, ‘Best Group’), while cutting their teeth on stages with artists including Teenage Joans, Press Club, King Stingray, Ocean Grove and more.
In 2025, the band continued to level up, sharing stages with icons like Grinspoon, while their online platform continued to grow with the successful release of ‘Breathing Lead’ and ‘When He’s Not Around’.
