Continuing to blaze a trail in Australian indie-pop that is very much her own, Sydney’s EVIE IRIE returns with a brand new track, titled ‘REBEL’.

A song that arrives layered with vibrancy and authenticity, the release of ‘Rebel’ further solidifies Evie’s presence as an exciting homegrown name to be watching, as the second half of 2025 rolls out.

Following on from previous release ‘I’m Not Sorry’, as well as her triumphant spin in the triple j studios for Like A Version earlier this year, ‘Rebel’ shows the listener a snapshot of an artist who is definitely enjoying an exciting creative peak. To discover that the first threads of this song came together when Evie was, by her own account, “16 and inexperienced”, makes ‘Rebel’ – as we hear it here – that much more of an impactful listen.

As Evie explains, “We were so ahead of our time when we first started writing ‘Rebel’. Sometimes demos pull me back in, months or years later. They knock on the door, wanting a new life. That’s what happened with ‘Rebel’. It resonated with me now, as a 22 year old who has fallen in love and lust, more than it ever had.”

Rewriting and recording the original into a version that matched the outlook and perspectives Evie has gained in the years that had followed that initial songwriting session, has brought ‘Rebel’ to life in a beautifully matured way.

The track was co-written and produced by the Australian pop hitmakers DNA Songs (The Veronicas, Dean Lewis, Jessica Mauboy). Thematically, ‘Rebel’ captures the feeling of “having to perform, or putting on an act just to be interesting.”

“I’m not trying to be some edgy, rebellious girl just for the aesthetic — that’s not me. It’s more about meeting the truth of a moment and going with it instead of resisting. The song is really me saying it’s okay not to be the ‘cool girl’ everyone expects. Genuine connections hit differently when you’re not performing for anyone… when you’re just present and vibing with someone, and everything becomes that much more electric.”
