With their second-ever release, Sydney based Alternative artist wednesday (or ’W’, for short) has exploded onto the scene with ‘I’m Fine Thanks’, a fiery, unrelenting critique of Australia’s class system – out in the world as of today via We Don’t Exist Records.
In their own words, wendsday is ‘an existentially conflicted Sydney musician who, with maximum futility, is trying to clamber out of the silicon valley vortex and resist the dark side version of the internet while being thoroughly and completely addicted to it’.
Recorded at Sawtooth Studios in Newcastle and produced by Clint Topic (who has recently worked alongside Bliss N’ Eso and Ball Park Music for ‘The Act’; an intimate no-phones series of live-recording events in Newcastle) ‘I’m Fine Thanks’ is full to the brim with grit, charm and bursting at the seams with energy – stylistically fitting somewhere between the likes of Sly Withers, Jeff Rosenstock or Weezer.
As explained by W, ‘I’m Fine Thanks’ is “a scream into the ear of every Youtube business “guru” and Martin Place Broker who propagate a particularly infuriating brand of deaf optimism—that we still have an equal chance in the rigged ferris wheel of capitalism. The track gently meditates on stoicism, sex & the sublime vape, agoraphobia-lite, post-truth and the triumph of nihilism in the face of a sluggish and faded Australian dream.”
As wendsday starts to make their mark on the Australian music scene, the artist intends to remain anonymous for as long as it’s viable-partly because W’s day job wouldn’t approve but also due to social anxiety and being a bit of a homebody.
The project as a whole will look to deviate slightly from the modern route of music promotion – in a world where artists are pushed to act as influencers just to get heard, wendsday would rather let the music speak for itself.
“With attention spans shortening by the second, ultimate success in music seems unlikely—but like our monolithic overlords in big tech and business I’m going to keep doing what I feel like regardless of the consequences. Anyways, I hope you enjoy my madness, commodified.” WENDSDAY
Following the first two releases, wendsday will be dropping a slate of singles over the coming months, the sum of which will form a body of work titled ‘Now or whenever’.
According to wendsday – fans can expect a wide variety of themes throughout ‘Now or whenever’, including but not limited to “Ennui, social media rot, the lost art of dick jokes, apathy, big tech, small brains, suburban fever, philosophical distortion, new-nostalgia, metaverse conspiracy, creepy pasta, diet alcoholism, the infinite scroll, dolphins, career dysmorphia, participation medals, Australiana—and a little bit of love.”
