Perth indie trio About Yesterday are continuing to define themselves by a powerful live presence and unshakeable musical chemistry; notably manifested through strong releases in recent years.
Since their debut in late 2023, the group have developed a strong bed of sonic influences from which their original flavour has flourished – today we hear their latest offering in the single, ‘Natural Obsession’.
Following on from tracks ‘Landline’ and their breakthrough debut ‘Bound To Lose’ in 2024, ‘Natural Obsession’ is About Yesterday’s next step forward in demonstrating their status as one of Perth’s brightest new names.
Recorded at Sumo Studios, the band remember ‘Natural Obsession’ coming together in a state of delirium. Capturing this momentum in the studio led to an organic songwriting session that has now turned into one of the band’s most memorable recordings to date.
As vocalist/bassist Annalise Feilding explains, “This track was written in an energetic songwriting session. …It was going too well to stop. I brought it in as a verse and a chorus and we managed to form it into a whole song. Once we started, we couldn’t get enough of just adding layer after layer, making each part that little bit more punchy. It was definitely one of our favourites to write and we would rehearse it over and over because we couldn’t get enough of the groove.”
A track like ‘Natural Obsession’ navigates the complex feelings that are attached to those heady moments of initial attraction; sometimes bordering on obsessive, but most of the time leading a person into emotional territory that feels vulnerable and raw.
Matching the lyrical energy with heavy guitars and rhythms, About Yesterday have taken this moment to show new and long-time listeners alike how their own songwriting has evolved in parallel to their journey together as friends and artists.
“It’s raw and honest, showing the struggle to fight off an almost obsessive attraction while dealing with vulnerability and uncertainty. The heavy guitar riffs and solid drums, combined with thoughtful lyrics bring out the back and forth of emotions, worried about coming off desperate but hoping the other person feels the same. It’s a real and honest look at the mix of longing and caution that comes with taking a chance on something fragile but meaningful.” ABOUT YESTERDAY, ANNALISE FEILDING
In their short time together, About Yesterday have claimed solid ground together as a band; expanding their audience on stages supporting the likes of Sly Withers, Art Fool and Homebrand; earning strong support from both triple j and Triple J Unearthed, as well as key community radio and online media channels, About Yesterday have an exciting new chapter ahead as the second half of 2025 continues to reveal itself.
